A Beautiful Creatures Original E-Book Story

We are excited to share a BIG surprise . .

New York, NY [June 7, 2011] – Little, Brown Books for Young Readers will publish an exclusive e-book as part of the bestselling BEAUTIFUL CREATURES series by award-winning authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, it was announced today by Andrew Smith, the division’s Vice President and Deputy Publisher. DREAM DARK: A BEAUTIFUL CREATURES STORY is a never-before-seen short story, created as a prequel to BEAUTIFUL CHAOS, the hugely anticipated third book in the series, which goes on sale October 13.  The e-book is set to release on August 2 for $1.99, and will be available for download across all digital platforms.

This all-new story focuses on the fan-favorite character Link who undergoes a heart-racing transformation.  Wounded during a climactic battle, Link slowly realizes that being bitten by a Supernatural does more than break the skin—it can change a person, inside and out, turning him into a creature more and more like the dark creature who injured him.  As a special bonus, DREAM DARK will include an exclusive sneak peek at the first five chapters of BEAUTIFUL CHAOS.

“We have had strong success with the first two books in the series in e-book form— with sales of over 30,000 copies combined,” remarked Andrew Smith. “It is thrilling to be able to announce a brand-new e-book story by these dynamic, bestselling authors— and have it available this summer for the countless fans who have been clamoring for a further glimpse into this fantastical world and are eagerly awaiting the October 18 release of BEAUTIFUL CHAOS.”

“We are so happy to continue to support our loyal online readership with this original e-book,” say authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, on their decision to write a short story in this format. “So many of our readers have asked us to write more about other characters in the BEAUTIFUL CREATURES novels, Link in particular. This story is for them.”

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES was named an Amazon #1 Teen Best Book of The Year and #5 Editor’s Pick Best Book of the Year for 2009.  BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS was an instant New York Times, Indiebound, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller. Foreign rights have sold in 28 languages and movie rights have been optioned by Warner Bros. with Richard LaGravenese set to write the script and direct, with Erwin Stoff to produce. YA Smackdown – Team Paranormal *SuperAwesomeFoxyMegaHot

*Shout out to both Starkid and the awesome commenter on Gayle’s post who rightly used this term to describe magic.

Let the games begin. That’s right. YA Smackdown 2011. Gayle got her Robert DeNiro on last week, here.  Gayle, while a small person (aka skinny broad) is a big talker. Congrats on your new NYT Bestselling sequel, WHERE SHE WENT.  You continue to be awesome, as awesome who someone who partaketh not in the one true religion of SuperAwesomeFoxyMegaHotMagic can be. Enough said.

Now, stop with the making nice. Time for an some old school Smack-o-rama. And sorry, Ally, Team Dystopian is going to have to take care of itself (and wah wah wah, we’ve seen how many weeks you stayed on the NYT Bestseller List. Team Dystopian, aka you and Suzanne Collins, can go cry us a river!)

Gayle, let’s look at what you do for a living, over on TEAM CONTEMPORARY. YOU MAKE CHILDREN CRY. YOU MAKE GROWN UPS CRY. In certain societies, that would make you an evil person. In an (admittedly somewhat dull) Law and Order episode, you could be tried as an accessory after the fact. How do we know this? Aside from watching a lot of Law and Order, Margie read IF I STAY at the L.A. Times Festival of Books, where SHE SAT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FESTIVAL AND SOBBED. Like a baby. This hurt her. It also embarrassed her, for example, when she met Laurie Halse Anderson (another of your TEAM CONTEMPORARY co-conspirators!) and was still sobbing. And let’s just say getting her copy of Wintergirls signed did not exactly lift her mood. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Did you never watch cartoons on Saturday morning? Did you never get to go in the bouncy house? Have a Sno-Cone? Go on a roller coaster? Has NOTHING HAPPY ever happened in your life? Your words are glorious. Your characters are complexly shaded and compelling. You can craft a sentence better than anyone we know. Your Adam is sensitive and fantastic and EXTREMELY HOT. And yet you choose to use your powers for EVIL instead of GOOD. Think about it, Gayle. That’s all we ask. It’s not too late for you.

Your turn, Ally. Ally, Ally, Ally. TEAM DYSTOPIAN? REALLY? First of all, you have Stephenie Meyer’s agent. You’re from Stephenie Meyer’s state. Sweet Jiminy Crickets, you probably go to Stephenie Meyer’s church. COULD YOU NOT HAVE FIGURED OUT THAT SUPERNATURAL WAS THE WAY TO GO? Bree Despain got there, and she lives in your state. Aprilynne Pike got there, and she used to live in your state. Brodi Ashton’s on her way there. Did you not get the official State of Utah YA Supernatural MEMO? Margie only spends summers in Utah, and she got it. All we have to say to you is, unlike Ms. Meyer, you probably didn’t go to BYU. If you had gone to BYU, you might have found your way to the one true religion of SUPERAWESOMEFOXYMEGAHOTMAGIC. We’re also reporting you for hanging out with AnnDee Ellis, because she’s not on your team either. We don’t know if Gayle was aware you fraternize daily with a key player on TEAM CONTEMPORARY, but she is now. Expect sanctions to be announced shortly!

Ally, there’s hope for you. You’re a decent enough writer, as all the FREAKING GLOWING REVIEWS of Matched might have indicated to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we freaked out when we read your book and wrote a blurb for it while still holding your FREAKING manuscript in our shaking hands. You have NOT ONE BUT TWO hot guys, it’s all true. And you even work poetry into the picture, which is a low blow for all us frustrated former Lit grad students. Wah Wah Wah. Cry me the Great Salt Lake! When you’re done crying, consider this: in your third and final book in the Matched Trilogy, Lena from our BEAUTIFUL CREATURES will come on over and bring Cassia one of Amma’s casserole dishes full of Funeral Potatoes, the kind with the crumbled up cornflakes on top. Then she’ll whip up a Utopia Cast – in Latin, because this is, after all, TEAM PARANORMAL, where all the best magic is in Latin – and fix things up lickety split for y’all. No problem!

We’re throwing it down, girls. We accept Gayle’s challenge of a DUEL, this Thursday night, 4/28 at 7 p.m. At Diesel bookstore in Brentwood And yes, we’ll be using magic. BECAUSE WE CAN. GO TEAM PARANORMAL! Snap! Dang! Oh No She Didn’t. #YASMACKDOWN2011
